# Welcome to BCard

Supporting communities with community payment cards

## Welcome to the Team!

BCard is a payment card that helps people support their favorite communities through their everyday purchases. Simply by using the card, you can redirect fees that you're already paying towards your cause of choice.

Even better: BCard can unlock higher reward tiers as we get more people using the card. This means that communities can band together to unlock more revenue - all by using BCard instead of your traditional payment card.

BCard is made for communities BY a community. Unlike traditional cards, you get a say in how BCard runs simply by using the card. This co-operative model ensures that BCard will always put the community first when making decisions, and it means by using BCard, you are part of the team!

## Getting Started

BCard is currently available for US residents (we're working on making it available worldwide - stay tuned). You can get started by visiting <https://app.getbcard.io/> (works best on your mobile phone).

You can also check out our [Getting Started with BCard](/how-to-guides/getting-started-with-bcard) article for an in-depth guide.

## BCard is For Communities

# Getting Started with BCard

The sooner you start, the more you'll support your community

## 1. Get the App

You can start by going to <https://app.getbcard.io/> (works best on mobile)

{% hint style="info" %}

### (optional) Add to your Home Screen

BCard works best installed on your phone's home screen, so follow the instructions in the app if you want faster access, timely alerts, and better data security
{% endhint %}

## 2. Sign Up

Sign up by clicking on the *Signup or Login* button and entering your email. BCard will send you an email via privy.io with a 6-digit code. Enter this 6-digit code in the app to continue.

## 3. Choose a Community

Select the community you'd like to support. BCard will reward you in the community's reward token.

## 4. Enter your Personal Information

BCard is a debit card, so our card-issuing partner, [Transcard](https://www.transcard.com/), requires some personal information to create your card with their bank, [SouthState Bank](https://www.southstatebank.com/).

**BCard doesn't view or store your Address, Date of Birth, or Social Security Number.** This information is held securely by our regulated card-issuing partner, Transcard. **No credit check will be performed**.

{% hint style="info" %}
If you'd like to learn more about how BCard handles your personal data, check out [How BCard Safeguards Your Personal Info](/informational-articles/how-bcard-safeguards-your-personal-info)
{% endhint %}

## 5. Get your Card

Once you enter your information, you will immediately get access to your virtual card, which can be used for online purchases and added to [Apple Pay/Google Wallet](/how-to-guides/how-to-add-your-bcard-to-apple-pay-google-wallet) for in-person purchases.

If you ordered a physical card (currently only for the Nouns community), it will arrive at the address you entered in 7-14 business days.

## 6. Fund your Card

Since BCard is a debit card, you'll need to send some funds to your account to use it. Check out our article on [funding your BCard](/how-to-guides/how-to-fund-your-bcard) for more information.

## 7. Use your Card, Earn Rewards

Now that your card has funds on it, you can use it anywhere MasterCard is accepted, earning rewards for every purchase automatically!

# Fund your BCard with Cryptocurrency

Beam is a third party provider that allows you to link your BCard account to its service. It converts cryptocurrencies from ten different chains to USD via unique addresses assigned to you.

Go to the [Beam dApp ](https://beam.ansiblelabs.xyz/)and register an account. Note, this will require some KYC and is not currently available in all 50 states.

Once you have a registered account, you can link the routing and account number of your BCard

Any cryptocurrencies on their approved list that are transferred into your beam account are automatically transferred to USD and deposited onto your BCard.

*Note: Beam is not affiliated with BCard and does charge a percentage fee for this service. Please see their documentation for specific details.*

# How to Export Rewards

Rewards can be exported from your BCard account at any time.

Under the hood, many rewards are implemented as blockchain tokens, which means you can export them at any time. See [Community Reward Tokens](/legal-and-compliance/community-reward-tokens) to see which tokens are exportable.

For rewards which are blockchain tokens, they are distributed on a monthly basis directly to your BCard wallet, which was created when you signed up using [Privy.io](https://www.privy.io/). You can use these rewards seamlessly inside the BCard app.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Warning**: Exporting your rewards is a technical process that can sometimes lead to a loss of all of your rewards. BCard cannot be responsible for any lost rewards so please ensure you know what you're doing before you decide to export.
{% endhint %}

**If you decide you want to export your rewards, follow these instructions:**

1. Click on the profile icon on the top left corner > *My Information* > *Export my Wallet*.
2. Copy your Key or your Seed Phrase.
3. Import your Key or Seed Phrase into your Ethereum wallet of choice. We like [Rainbow Wallet](https://rainbow.me/en/).

You can now send your rewards to any other Ethereum wallet you like! &#x20;

# How BCard Safeguards Your Personal Info

Learn about what information is needed, why it's needed, and how it is kept safe.

## What Information Does BCard Need?

BCard is a debit card. That means when you create an account, you're going to be creating a bank account with our [card-issuing partner](https://www.transcard.com/)'s bank, [SouthState Bank](https://www.southstatebank.com/). **To comply with federal regulations, our card-issuing partner must collect certain information about you** before they can open your account and issue your card.

When creating an account on BCard, you will be asked to enter personal information like your Name, Address, Date of Birth, and Social Security number.

## What Information Does BCard Keep?

In general, **BCard aims to hold as little as your data as possible**. We believe strongly in personal privacy, and would prefer not to hold any sensitive user data if we can avoid it.

That being said, there are certain pieces of information we need to keep to ensure we can do things like show you your card number, recover your account, etc. Here's a list of all personal data BCard keeps on our system:

* Your first and last name
* Your email address
* Your connected web3 wallet address
* Card info, such as number, CVV, and expiry date
* Account info, such as bank account and routing numbers
* Transaction data (to display to you and to calculate rewards)

## How Does BCard Ensure My Personal Data is Safe?

We take the following steps to ensure your data is secure:

1. **We never view or hold any data we don't need**. For instance, your date of birth, SSN, address, and external bank information are never seen or held by BCard (they are transmitted directly to our federally-regulated card-issuing partner, Transcard).
2. **We hold the majority of your personal information on your own device.** We don't store your name, card number, account number, or expiry date anywhere except your device.
   * Your email and wallet addresses are held securely by [Privy](https://www.privy.io/), and never shared with anyone outside of BCard.
3. **We encrypt ALL information during transmission and at rest**. Encryption ensures that even if a breach happens, your information still cannot be read by anyone except you.
4. **We anonymize transaction data.** Transaction data is stored separately from user data and only referenced by ID, so it cannot be linked back to an individual user. We don't hold any location data.

# Which Payment Accounts Can be Used with BCard?

Your BCard can be linked to a variety of external accounts for funding or spending.

BCard is a financial product which can be linked to other financial products. Unfortunately, some work better than others. For that reason we have created this article to list successful (and unsuccessful) connections our users have made with their BCard.

Want to add to the list? Shoot us a message using our [Feedback Form](https://tally.so/r/mZ6rBV)

### Accounts that have successfully linked with BCard:

* Most traditional banks including&#x20;
  * Wells Fargo (ACH)
  * Chase (ACH)
  * Capital One (ACH)
* PayPal
* Amazon
* Apple Pay
* Google Pay
* Common Centralized Exchanges such as Coinbase

### Accounts that BCard can not be utilized with:

Due to Anti Money Laundering (AML) regulations, BCard can not currently be utilized with most peer-to-peer money transmitter services. These include:

* Venmo
* Cash App
* Sports betting applications (Fan Duel, MGM, etc)

# How Rewards Work

You earn community rewards every time you spend using BCard

Every time you spend using your BCard, a small percentage of the transaction amount goes to your favorite community, and you receive a reward from the community.

These rewards are distributed on a monthly basis (see [How Rewards are Calculated](/informational-articles/how-rewards-work/how-rewards-are-calculated)). Before they are distributed, these rewards are shown as "Pending".

Under the hood, many rewards are implemented as blockchain tokens, which means you can export them at any time. See [How to Export Rewards](/how-to-guides/how-to-export-rewards) to learn how to export them, or [Community Reward Tokens](/legal-and-compliance/community-reward-tokens), to see which tokens are exportable.

**So, what can you do with rewards?**

* Over time, rewards show how much each member has contributed to the community. By earning rewards you are showing your commitment to your community.
* Some communities allow members to vote for certain initiatives using their rewards. The more rewards you have earned, the more voting power you have.
* In the future, we will be adding more ways to use your rewards.  For instance, trading rewards for community merchandise.&#x20;

BCard aims to encourage people to support purpose-driven communities, so if you have any ideas on for rewards, feel free to [reach out to us](mailto:support@getbcard.io)!

# How Rewards are Calculated

Rewards are estimated instantly and finalized at the end of each month.

BCard distributes community rewards for every purchase you make, but the calculations can be different depending on which community you've selected.

In general, rewards are estimated at the time of purchase (these rewards are called "Pending Rewards"). At the end of every month, the BCard team finalizes the rewards. You can see an accounting of all rewards we have distributed here in our [Public Community Rewards sheet](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1uyjEkdesejPUH6_Exe7TR4LD2mo9GUSTaVI2ed6oJww/edit?gid=0#gid=0) (updated monthly).

Read on to learn more.

## Two Types of Rewards: Fixed and Variable

BCard works with many different kinds of communities, and tailors our reward program based on the community's wishes. As a result, we have two kinds of rewards available: fixed rewards and variable rewards.

* **Fixed rewards** are based on a certain rate/dollar spent (ex. 1 BCARD/dollar spent).
* **Variable rewards** are based on the amount of [interchange revenue](/informational-articles/how-bcard-makes-money) generated for your purchase (ex. You spend $100 USD and generate $1 USD in interchange revenue for your community, you get $1 worth of your community's token).

**Variable rewards are estimated at the time of purchase based on the current price of the community's social token and our current interchange revenue rate**. Both token price and interchange revenue rate can change during the month, so at the end of the month, we reconcile rewards by doing the following:

1. Calculating interchange revenue you created through your spend (note: this could go up depending on our total transaction volume).
2. Using the revenue generated by you to buy your community's token (note: the price of the token could go up/down during the month).
3. Making your tokens claimable.
4. Updating the app to show your claimable tokens and how much token you earned per transaction.&#x20;

# How BCard Makes Money

Every time you use a payment card, 1-2% of the total price is paid as a fee. BCard uses those fees to support web3 communities.

At the core of BCard is a simple idea: we can support causes we care about through financial fees that we are already paying. One such fee is called interchange, and it's how BCard creates revenue to support your favorite communities.

## What is Interchange?

Interchange is the fee that is paid by a merchant (ie. the store you are buying from) to a network operator (ie. VISA/MasterCard). The network operator then gives the majority of the fee (>90%) to the bank that issued your card.

Interchange fees vary greatly depending on a variety of factors (ie. in-store vs online, credit vs debit, merchant type, etc.) Depending on where you live, **interchange fees are 1-2% of a total transaction**, and are built into the price, making them a hidden fee. In fact, many merchants charge the same price whether or not you are paying with a card, meaning you pay this fee regardless of your payment method.

## How Does BCard Make Money?

BCard partners with a card issuer ([Transcard](https://www.transcard.com/)) who gives us a portion of the interchange fee for every purchase you make. The amount we make depends on our total monthly transaction volume (ie. how much money ALL BCard users spend in a given calendar month). Here are the rates we currently have:

<table><thead><tr><th width="316">Monthly Transaction Volume</th><th>Interchange Revenue Share (ie. reward rate)</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>less than $1M USD</td><td>0.10%</td></tr><tr><td>$1M - 2.5M USD</td><td>0.25%</td></tr><tr><td>$2.5 - 5M USD</td><td>0.30%</td></tr><tr><td>$5M - 10M USD</td><td>0.35%</td></tr><tr><td>$10 - 25M USD</td><td>0.40%</td></tr><tr><td>more than $25M USD</td><td>0.50%</td></tr></tbody></table>

BCard keeps half of the fees above to pay for our expenses, and distributes the remainder to communities in the form of token rewards or onchain revenue.

## Communities Working Together For Higher Rewards

Monthly transaction volume is calculated for all BCard users (regardless of which community you select) and the rates above apply to all transactions once the thresholds are met. This means that **communities on BCard are working together to unlock higher rewards**.

Nouns may not be able to drive $1M USD in transaction volume alone, but when you add BanklessDAO and Origin DAO to the mix, we can reach the threshold together and EVERYONE will unlock more rewards.

## Why Isn't Interchange Revenue Share 1-2%?

BCard is currently in beta, and 100% owned and operated by the web3 community. As a result we have fewer resources than private VC-backed companies, and don't have access to preferred interchange rates.

**As BCard gains users and transaction volume, we can increase our interchange rate to the 100% (ie. the entire 1-2%)**. This will take time, but if we succeed we can become a financial service provider that is owned by its users, which means we'll always have our users' best interests at heart.

# Why Does BCard Allow Only ACH Loads?

Crypto, Plaid, and Zelle can only be enabled when we have enough transaction volume.

It might be surprising to see that a web3 product like BCard only allows ACH (automated clearing house) loading of funds. While we'd like to support loading your card balance via crypto, our card-issuing partners won't allow this just yet, mainly due to the risk associated with the blockchain industry. Plaid and Zelle require large transaction volumes before BCard can support these services.

## What Risk Does Blockchain Pose to a Card Issuer?

The US financial system is built of layers of financial service companies (including banks) which accumulate and send capital (money) to each other, charging fees to make profit.&#x20;

Our card issuer (Transcard) has a relationship with a bank (SouthState Bank) who has a relationship with a card network (Mastercard). Each of these relationships may be supported by other financial service companies which provide things like technology (ex. Plaid, Zelle), payment (ex. Stripe), settlement (ex. Dwolla). There are [hundreds thousands of financial service companies](https://www.zippia.com/advice/financial-services-industry-statistics/#:~:text=As%20far%20as%20the%20number,million%20people%20employed%20in%202021.) in the US alone.

Given that each of these financial service companies are transacting tens or hundreds of millions of dollars on a daily basis with each other, trust (aka the relationship) between the companies is extremely important. Any breach of trust could be the end for one of these companies.

In the case of the blockchain industry, the regulatory environment and collapse of firms like FTX in 2021 created a situation where most banks won't work with any companies who are associated with blockchain. In other words, **working with a blockchain company could be enough for a bank to drop our card issuer as a client**. This would end their business, so it's something they take very seriously.

## The Key: Transaction Volume

Since financial services companies make their money via transactions, the key success metric for them is transaction volume (ie the amount of money flowing through their systems). **This means that if BCard can produce enough transaction volume, we can convince more financial services companies to work with us.**

How much is enough? There's no hard and fast rule, but a good milestone is $10M USD monthly. We believe **if BCard can get 10,000 people to spend $1000/month using our cards, we can enable crypto, Plaid, and Zelle loads**.

## Taking the Long Road to Guard our Ethos

You may have noticed that cards issued by the likes of crypto.com and Coinbase don't have this issue. These companies are privately owned and have raised hundreds of millions in venture capital, which means they can spend hundreds of thousands a month to shortcut their relationships with other financial service companies. It also means they must put the needs of their investors above the needs of their users.

BCard, on the other hand, is funded and owned entirely by the web3 community. Since we don't have investors, it means that we can put the needs of our users first. It also means that we can't shortcut the relationship step - we need to build our relationships and transaction volume slowly and steadily.

BCard's goal is to have all of the features you expect in a web3 payment card.  By taking the long road, we hope we can build an organization you actually want to be part of, rather than just another bank.&#x20;

# Community Reward Tokens

Here you can find a list of all tokens we award our users.

For legal reasons, **BCard can only distribute tokens that are NOT considered "investment contracts"**. &#x20;

The SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) uses the Howey Test to define whether or not tokens are investment contracts. The Howey Test looks at the follow criteria:

1. An investment of money
2. In a common enterprise
3. A reasonable expectation of profit derived solely from the efforts of others

**BCard does not distribute tokens which would satisfy ALL of the above criteria.** To ensure that's the case, we list all tokens we distribute on this page.
